Wycombe named an unchanged line-up to the one that drew 1-1 at Luton in the week. Andy Baird made it back on the bench while Dave Carroll and Paul McCarthy were both still out with injuries. There was little to cheer the crowd in the opening stages and Blackpool's small following must have feared the worst when their influential striker Bret Ormerod was carried off on a stretcher in the 23rd minute. Wycombe began to pick up the pace on the half hour mark when Keith Ryan saw his header tipped over by Tony Caig in the Blackpool goal but the breakthrough never came. It was just before the 45 minute mark when a punch as damp as the weather by Taylor fell straight to the feet of Nowland and Wycombe were 1-0 down. Wycombe responded by forcing two corners in quick succession, the second of which Cousins headed just wide. However, it got worse deep into first-half stoppage time when Matt Lawrence waited for Taylor to clear on the edge of the box but the clearance was miss-hit. Even then Wycombe had a chance to clear their lines but Vinnicombe played the ball into the path of Lee who curled the ball neatly into the top corner as the Wycombe defence capitulated. Half-time Wycombe 0 Blackpool 2 Sanchez was quoted after the game as saying he would have substituted all eleven players at half-time if he had the chance but he had to settle for bringing on Andy Baird and Alan Beeton. New style goal nets have been installed at Adams Park since the last home league game versus Cambridge but the Wycombe strike force rarely looked like testing them. Sean Devine came the closest when he struck a chance against the crossbar in the 64th minute. A goal then might have changed the final outcome but Wycombe's frustration in front of goal was summed up in the 71st minute when Devine was booked for throwing the ball at a Blackpool player after Wycombe had been given a free-kick! On 76 minutes a massive scramble in the Blackpool box ended with McSprorran crashing the ball high into the Valley End terrace as the fans began to give up hope of a come back. The visitors had the ball in the back of the net again on 86 minutes before Jamie Bates completed Wycombe's sad afternoon by blasting a chance over from 20 yards. This was a hugely disappointing result for the Wycombe fans and a performance that had Lawrie Sanchez looking away in disgust at certain moments. Next Saturday's game at home to Oxford City in the FA Cup will now be the chance for the players to restore their pride and show the fans that this was just a one-off performance. Final Score Wycombe 0 Blackpool 2 WYCOMBE TEAM: Taylor, Lawrence, Vinnicombe, Cousins, Bates, Brown, Ryan, Devine, Emblen, McSporran, Simpson subs not used Osborn and Harkin Att:5,021 |
