Football League 'League Two'
Archive photo - Wycombe on the attack versus Wrexham - September 2005 Wanderers took their run without a win in 'League Two' to four games after going down 2-0 in the 1pm kick-off at Wrexham. The Welsh side scored both their goals in the first half and there was little serious response from Wycombe. An inswinging corner from the left by Matt Crowell on 12 minutes saw Denis Lawrence given space to rise and head past Matt Duke for the opener and Aston Villa loanee Sam Williams superbly headed home at the far post three minutes later to leave Wycombe chasing the game. A double substitution at half-time and a change to a 3-4-3 formation did little to change the pattern of the game, leaving little for the travelling contingent to cheer about.
Team news saw Danny Senda fail a late fitness test with Russell Martin stepping in at right back as replacement. The only other change from the line-up in the midweek 0-0 draw at Northampton saw Jermaine Easter get his first start with Dean Bowditch dropping to the bench. Also having not named a substitute 'keeper against Northampton John Gorman returned Steve Williams on the bench as cover for Matt Duke.
It would probably be fair to say that Wanderers never recovered from the early strikes by the home side. Both goals left question marks over the Wanderers defence and the final scoreline could have been worse but for poor finishing and saves from on loan 'keeper Duke. The first goal saw Lawrence rise highest at the near side of the six yard box while the second came when former Wycombe triallist Juan Ugarte, and now back on loan at Wrexham from Crewe, pushed the ball right to Crowell whose deep cross saw debutant Sam Williams get between Roger Johnson and Russell Martin to crash a header past Duke.
Wycombe have conceded first on ten previous occasions in the League this season and only lost once but a come back never looked likely against the Welsh side. Wanderers best chance to get back into the game came ten minutes before the break when a pass from Stefan Oakes saw Tommy Mooney let the ball run to Clint Easton but the defender's cross into the box was poor. But it was a rare moment of excitement for the 250 or so Wycombe fans in the crowd. Later in the half they saw Simon Spender blast over from 12 yards when it looked certain he would make it 3-0 and only Duke's tip around from Jim Whitley's shot on 80 minutes restricted the margin to two goals.
The two goal defeat was the Wanderers highest in the League season and the first in the League since John Gorman took over as Manager in November 2004. The previous two goal margin defeat in the League came at Boston United on 16th October 2004.
Final Score - Wrexham 2 Wycombe 0
Speaking to the media after the game John Gorman admitted that Wrexham had given his side a hard time but added "We've had hard games all season but we've had so many draws where we have deserved to win but today we deserved to lose and that is the first time I can honestly say that this season that we have deserved to lose."
Meanwhile, Wrexham coach Brian Carey said the victory had been excellent and added "We showed great determination today and surprisingly the early kick off seemed to suit us. The early goal definitely helped us. They didn't recover from that and that allowed us to push on and take control of the game." Commenting on Villa loanee Sam Williams he said, "He's had a couple of difficult Welsh Cup games for us and has taken a bit of stick from the opposition in those, but he will come back better for the experience. He's done well for us on his league debut and will be pleased with his contribution against a side that have been at the top of the league all season."
