Wanderers fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Plainmoor on Boxing Day. The home side led 2-0 at the break and although Wycombe had numerous chances to get back into the game it wasn't until the 71st minute when Kevin Betsy finished after Tommy Mooney had threaded the ball in from the right that the deficit was reduced. There were just five minutes left on the clock when more good work from Mooney saw a cross delivered that Charlie Griffin headed goalwards only for Torquay defender Alex Lawless to provide the vital touch that took the ball past his own 'keeper to give Wycombe a share of the points.
Wycombe team news saw Stefan Oakes and Joe Burnell return after their recent injuries, with both players making appearances from the bench. Sergio Torres was missing with an aggrivated groin injury and Russell Martin came into midfield. Frank Talia returned in goal but the game came too soon for ex-Torquay loanee Ian Stonebridge. Meanwhile, Danny Senda played at right back before missing the home game with Leyton Orient on Thursday 29th December through suspension.
The first 30 minutes of this game are best forgotten for Wycombe. The home side, languishing near the foot of the table but bouyed by a recent upturn in form, started the brighter side and took the lead in the 13th minute. A free-kick from the left wing saw Morike Sako outjump the Wycombe defence around the penalty spot and loop his header over Frank Talia and back into the corner of the net. The Gulls doubled their advantage on 31 minutes when a free-kick from around the half-way line was not cleared sufficiently by both Roger Johnson and Matt Bloomfield and it allowed Tony Bedeau to turn and shot home from the edge of the box after Jo Kuffour laid the ball off.
Bloomfield and Johnson contrived to miss clear cut chances for Wycombe prior to the break while Griffin headed against the crossbar on the hour mark as it looked like Wanderers would never score. However, John Gorman's side kept battling away and were eventually rewarded with a deserved point. It was Mooney who had a hand in both goals. The first came when the former Watford striker swept the ball back across from the right of midfield for Betsy to run onto in the opposite channel before taking the ball around the 'keeper and into the opposite bottom corner of the net. The equaliser also saw Joe Burnell play a major part as he battled to win possession in midfield before finding Mooney on the right wing. This time the cross was flicked towards goal by the head of Griffin and it was Lawless who stuck out a leg to to deflect the ball over the line despite the efforts of Marriott to keep it out.
