Football League 'League Two'
Nathan Tyson celebrates his goal against Barnet Wanderers made hard work of beating Barnet at Adams Park with Nathan Tyson's 21st minute strike being the only goal of the first ever Football League meeting between the two sides. The victory moves Wycombe to sixth place in the table and with Notts County losing at Shrewsbury it leaves John Gorman's side as not only the only unbeaten team in 'League Two' but all divisions of the Football League.
Team news against Barnet saw Sergio Torres make his first start with Kevin Betsy dropping to the bench after the latter had taken a knock a training. Frank Talia also passed a late fitness test to keep up his ever present record this season and the Aussie 'keeper had to be alert in the dying moments as the visitors threatened to snatch a late equaliser.
Earlier in the game Tyson notched his 9th League goal of the season after a clinical finish from the left of goal following a through ball from Joe Burnell. Burnell fired over on the 30 minute mark while Torres also went close to doubling the lead on 34 minutes after Mooney had laid the ball back from the right but the Argentinian's shot was pushed on to the post by Barnet 'keeper Ross Flitney. Wanderers finished the half with a flurry of corners but once again the lack of finish kept the score to just 1-0 at the break.
Wycombe kept up the pressure at the start of the second half with Mooney taking advantage of a slip by the Barnet 'keeper on 51 minutes before centering the ball for Tyson who delayed with his shot and opted to lay the ball to Torres who also couldn't find the target. A minute later a Stefan Oakes free-kick from the left was headed back into the danger by Roger Johnson only to see Mike Williamson's header tipped over by Flitney. Wycombe had another great chance on 55 minutes after Torres had pushed the ball out to the left to Tyson leaving the striker with a one on one with the 'keeper - unfortunately the shot was too close to the 'keeper who saved.
Mike Williamson blocks a late effort from Barnet Those missed chances and a late surge by Barnet left Wycombe sweating on breaking a run of four successive draws. Nick Bailey, Giuliano Grazioli and Dean Sinclair all went close to spoiling the day for Wycombe. Bailey had the best chance on 59 minutes when he was left with a clear header at goal from 10 yards following a cross from the right. Fortunately for Wycombe the Bees defender sent his effort high of the target. Grazioli saw a flicked shot from the left on 77 minutes cleared off the line by Danny Senda while Sinclair's shot with seven minutes remaining suffered a similar fate after a hectic scramble in the Wycombe penalty area. But Wycombe survived to collect all three points.
Final Score - Wycombe 1 Barnet 0
Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after the game, John Gorman said "We should have finished them off before half-time. We could have come in two or three up but that has been the story of our season so far, we just don't punish teams. But we've got three points today and I'm not going to complain." The Wycombe Manager also praised Frank Talia on his performance, commenting, "Frank was maginficent and I'm delighted for him. He's had a couple of games recently when things went against him but today he was absolutely superb and especially as he was lucky to play today as he had an injury in training on Thursday."
