Lawrie Sanchez refused to talk to the press for the third week running as his side collapsed 5-2 against financially challenged Oldham. Wanderers were three goals down inside 22 minutes and although debutant Andy Bell pulled a goal back three minutes after the break the visitors added two more either side of another Bell goal to run out clear winners.
The less said about this latest shocker the better. Sanchez made six changes to the side that lost to Colchester in the week including bringing in new loan signing Guy Branston in the centre of defence. But everything started to go wrong after just 15 seconds when Paul Murray cut in from the right before sending a low shot past Steve Williams from 20 yards. With Oldham atacking at will, they added further goals through Danny Hall and Newcastle United loanee Calvin Zola before Wanderers even considered threatening the opposition goal.
Three minutes into the second half Bell finished off from close range after Jermaine McSporran's flick on from Williams clearance had been wealkly headed back towards his own goal by Hall. However, a revival never looked likely. Oldham added a fourth from the penalty spot on 76 minutes through Chris Killen after a blantant foul by Steve Brown. Bell pulled one back again moments later following a deflected through ball by Gavin Holligan but the final nail in Wanderers coffin came in 87 minutes when an unmarked Murray sidestepped Williams to make it 5-2 to the visitors and complete the embarassment.
Those there to witness this latest catastrophe would have to confess that this was no freak result. The visitors had a hatful of chances on goal in the first half and it took Wanderers until three minutes before the break to finally put any serious pressure on the visitors goal. Then it was Darren Currie's effort blocked by John Sheridan to be quickly followed by Michael Simpson's follow up blocked by Hall. By then Sanchez had already scrapped his original line-up by withdrawing Mark Rogers and Dannie Bulman in preference for Steve Dell and McSporran.
Bell's goal after the break could once again been a catalyst for a Wanderers comeback but only a Holligan left footed drive on 69 minute, that ended amongst the happy travelling Oldham fans, is noteworthy prior to Killen sealing the game from the penalty spot. By then it was clear that Wanderers troubles continue to mount with each game and there's only so many excuses left to dish out and only so many that can be believed.
