Wycombe Wanderers 1
Tuesday 16th March 2004
Football League Division Two
Michael Simpson Wanderers completed a year without an away win with a 1-1 draw at Layer Road against Colchester United. Wycombe recovered from a poor start in this game after Craig Fagan had put the U's ahead with an 8th minute penalty following a blatant trip on Fagan in the box by Roger Johnson.
Fagan almost doubled the lead moments later with an overhead kick before Wycombe pulled themselves back into the game starting on 33 minutes when Darren Currie saw a free-kick tipped over the bar Simon Brown in the U's goal. Jamie Cade pulled an effort wide for the home side on 37 minutes but a minute later Wycombe were level when Michael Simpson came through from midfield to head in Danny Senda's powerful delivery from the right wing. Buoyed by the goal, Wanderers nearly turned the game on it head a minute before the break when Matt Bloomfield's punt forward saw Nathan Tyson control and then force a good save from Simon Brown.
Half-time 1-1
The second-half was a more even affair with goal scoring opportunities for both sides. On 63 minutes a long throw from the right by The U's caused panic at the far post for the Wanderers defence but Wycombe's best spell of the game followed. Some good possession by the Wanderers culminated in Simpson's shot being blocked on 67 minutes while on 78 minutes Craig Faulconbridge's lay off to Tyson towards the left of goal saw the former Reading youngster fire into the side netting.
Urged on by the Wanderers followers behind the goal, another delivery by Currie, this time from the left, saw Jermaine McSporran connect but blocked again by The U's defence with five minutes left on the clock. There was then a scare at the other end before a perfectly timed challenge by Stuart Nethercott shut out the danger. Wanderers' best chance to snatch all three points came in stoppage time when Currie's perfect cross from the right towards the far post saw Craig Faulconbridge direct his header too close and without enough pace at Simon Brown and the U's keeper was able to gather with ease.
All in all a draw was fair result but it's now 12 games without a win for the Wanderers, although this was the eigth draw during that same spell. Relegation looks a certainty now but there have been enough signs in recent games that with the addition of a regular goal scorer to compliment existing players, Wanderers would be totally different proposition.
