FANS FORUM REPORT-THE BOSS (Tuesday 6th September 2005) John Gorman has said he will not compromise playing style for the sake of grinding out results. The Wycombe boss was speaking to a 200 strong audience at the Fans Forum held on Tuesday 6th September 2005 and commented "I don't care what League you are in, I know that every footballer that I have ever coached or played with all want to pass the ball on the ground and all want to play attractive football and the coaches and the managers complicate the game. They tend to want to win so badly that they don't care how they win. My philosophy is we are going to win by playing good football. When I first came here I said I will not change my principles and I still will not change my principles." Gorman said you had to have belief in those principles, adding, "My tactics has always been and always will be, win, lose or draw is to play the style of football that for me football fans want to see." He went on to emphasise that he believed you could win by playing his prefered style of football, saying "We've got real quality players here and everyone of them wants to enjoy their work and want to play football the way the game should be played. We are going to continue to do that and continue to get good results by doing that. It was proved last year with Yeovil. They done it and Southend as well to a lesser extent and now they are in a higher League." The former England coach is coming up for ten months in charge at Wycombe and despite results on the pitch returning just 12 wins from 35 League games, the positive tactics have earned praised from many Wycombe supporters. Gorman also believes that the style of football will be better suited in the higher divisions, adding "Our ambition is to get up the League's. I believe if we get out of this League and we do reach the target that has been set and eventually reach the 'Championship', there is no reason for big change because the type of players that we have here now will be better in a higher League." The Forum came in the week following the Nathan Tyson transfer deadline day drama where Wanderers turned down an offer of £300,000 for the striker from Cardiff City. Gorman was pleased that Tyson had remained at the Club but added that new players and possible replacements were always being looked at. He said "You have to understand that players sometimes go out of contract. Nathan (Tyson) has been superb in his attitude I think right through this whole period. But we do have people that we have got in mind. Even though Nathan is a smashing player, I would be the first to say to him 'on you go' because there is always another player to replace him." Gorman gave Sergio Torres as an example of a new name that the fans had taken to, before asking fans not to worry, adding "We are really right on the ball on this one but at the same time we would like to keep Nathan. The Board have done tremendous and showed the ambition of the Club to back me, the staff and to keep Nathan and especially for the fans because I don't think any of the fans would have appreciated Nathan leaving the night before the deadline and we didn't get a chance to bring anybody else in." Gorman went on to stress the importance of the Youth set-up at the Club and said he had been impressed with youngsters currently coming through under new Youth boss Ian Culverhouse. He said "We've been looking at our young players more now than ever before and getting them involved. We've got a really good youth set-up here and four or five of them have really impressed me and are really catching the eye." Gorman added "The youth is very important to this club. If we can bring the youngsters through it will save the club a lot of money." Fans Forum report - part 1 - Club finances Click here for all the latest from chairboys.co.uk |
