CHAIRBOYS ON THE NET 1996 - 1997 It was always a purpose of Chairboys on the Net to provide a historical documentation of the history of Wycombe Wanderers. All this comes into its own when glancing back at the report from the game at Brentford on 30th January 1996 where we are reminded that Wycombe played in yellow shirts with white shorts in the first half and then changed to yellow shorts at half-time. Not mentioned is the close proximity of Brentford's ground to a brewery and Wycombe officials' failure to arrange a night out there. Yes folks, we're onto the subject of shirts. Who could forget the infamous attempt at consulting the fans over the new kit to be introduced for the following season. If you have actually forgetten, then click here. The attempts to 'Keep the Quarters' were perhaps just a distraction from what was happening (or not happening) on the pitch. Alan Smith claiming the kit was 'good enough for Nick Faldo' didn't really have the calming effect he would have liked. He even started upsetting Club officials too (a definite step too far) and the first major story COTN had to deal with was on Monday 30 September 1996. No mobile text messaging or even a message board back then. Instead a real person on the end of phone saying "Have you heard? He's gone!". John Gregory was eventually named as the new boss and probably branded as the first in what has become a long line of 'the next Martin O'Neill'. Martin O'Neill he was not but he did save the Club from relegation with a combination of sturdy signings and a regimented playing style. The relegation battle at the end of the 1996/97 season saw COTN launch what would become an annual 'Survival Path' page. Thanks again to Sean Gregan for your goal against Shrewsbury Town. Meanwhile, the design of the site had been updated to make use of frames in what would eventually form what you see today. Additional pages had been added, including an all-time record of results and the first form of real-time interaction with readers was attempted via a Live Chat system.
