MAPES SIGNS FROM BERKHAMSTED (Wednesday 28th May 2003 - revised Friday 30th May) ![]() Mapes has been doing the rounds since his release by Spurs and spent a brief spell in Norwich City's Under 18 side during the 1999/2000 season. The following season he was on the books of Cardiff City before a further trial with Yeovil Town in the summer of 2001 brought no joy. In October 2001 Mapes joined Ryman League outfit Harrow Borough and later in the season his busy campaign was completed with yet another trial at Scottish side Ayr United. Mapes moved back into the Ryman League at the beginning of 2002 with a switch to Edgware Town but moved on again to Wealdstone the following August. He joined Berkhamsted Town at the end of February 2003 but has now been given his chance to prove himself again at full-time level. Subject to a medical, Mapes will sign a one year deal and join the rest of the Wanderers squad for training commencing 9th June. Talking of the transfer, Lawrie Sanchez told the Bucks Free Press "He's been the best of the triallists we've had in. He's very mobile and tidy midfielder and he will give us fresh legs in that area." The Wycombe boss went on to say "He's been at Tottenham and after being out of the game he's got the desire and hunger to get back in and stay in." And Sanchez says he hasn't brought him just to hang around in the reserves, adding "He doesn't stand on ceremony and it is up to him now to force one of the established professionals out of the side".
