Goals always looked on the cards in this game. Wanderers' keeper Steve Williams was forced to save with his legs in the opening stages while at the other end a deflected shot hit the Colchester upright and Martyn Lee went close with a free-kick all inside the initial ten minutes. Wanderers won the game with a goal rush in the minutes leading up to the half-time interval. First on 38 minutes a free-kick from the left flank by Mapes was forced home by Luke Oliver from 10 yards. Then on the stroke of 45 minutes Bell fired home from around 20 yards after Hallet had made a good challenge to win the ball in midfield. Colchester then conceded a third in stoppage time following a short corner from the left by Mapes that saw Nathaniel Griffiths' shot partially blocked but Bell was on hand at the far post to slot the ball home. The visitors rarely threatened the Wanderers defence and on 66 minutes it was Mapes who scored the most bizarre goal of the game when his corner from the left when straight through the United defence and into the far corner of the net. Griffiths saw a saw blocked at the near post on 74 minutes before Bell completed his hat-trick a minute later when he converted from six yards after Martyn Lee had pulled the ball back from the left bye-line. All five triallists put in solid displays with Bell obviously standing out with his three goals. However, 20 year old Murphy in the left back position hardly put a foot wrong and his deliveries down the left wing caught the eye. Former Spurs and Norwich City academy player Mapes also impressed but whether Wycombe can make room for any of these players within the ever tightening budget remains to be seen.
