NO MONEY FROM DEVINE SALE
(Monday 20th January 2003)
Lawrie Sanchez Lawrie Sanchez has said he won't be getting any of the money from Sean Devine's transfer to Exeter City to spend on new players. The Wycombe boss was a telephone guest on ITV’s London region Soccer Sunday on 19th January 2003 and was asked by presenter Jonathan Wills that although Wycombe are a solvent club “Does this provide your own frustrations knowing that you can’t go out and splash the cash?”
Sanchez answered “Yes and No. When I took the job on I understood the situation. When you are a manager at a lower division club you have got to get on with it. It’s a waste of time me whinging that I want money because there is no money to be had.
”In my time there, which is four years at the beginning of February, having sold Sean Devine I’ve spent the best part of £20,000. There hasn’t been loads of money to spend at Wycombe and it’s very difficult. If you look at the top of the table, the teams at the top of the table are the teams that have spent all the money and I include Oldham in that.”

Wanderers' Manager was then asked “You say you’ve been there for four years. Does that make you think that it’s time to try other things or not?” Sanchez joked “One or two of the fans might think that”. He then added “I enjoy it at Wycombe. It’s a great club. I work under the circumstances we work under. We try and improve year on year. It’s very difficult. I think in a couple of years time when the Wigan’s, the Bristol City’s, the QPR’s and the Cardiff’s are all out of this division we will be competing against other second division teams of similar standing, the Brentford’s of this world. And then we’ve got a chance of doing better. At this moment in time, as those club’s are finding, it’s a hell of a lot harder getting out of the division than doing as well as Reading are doing in the First Division.”
Wills then quizzed the Wycombe boss on the departure of Sean Devine and asked “Was this disappointing for you and have you any of that money to spend on a new player?” Sanchez responded “The answer is no I haven’t got any of the money to spend on a new player. It’s always disappointing when a player has done extremely well for you leaves but at the same time I thought at this time of his career, he’s 32 next season, it was the best deal for the club. I got a bit of stick from the fans about doing it but I judged that there were other players at the club who would develop if Sean left. We’ve a young lad called Jonny Dixon whose come in and scored 3 in 4 games before he injured himself last week.
”We have to move on sometimes in football. Sean was obviously one of the highest paid players at the club and perhaps it gives younger players the chance to come on and show what they can do”
