SMITH GETS A ROUGH RIDE
(Saturday 5th August 2000)
Alan Smith - picture Chairboys on the NetAs expected former Wycombe Manager Alan Smith received a bit of a rough ride from the Wycombe fans during the pre-season friendly with Crystal Palace. Smith was returning as the new Manager of Crystal Palace but Smith had more to worry about, however, as his new team slumped to a 3-1 defeat to a makeshift Wycombe side.

Smith rejoined The Eagles following the shock departure of Steve Coppell earlier in the week. It's now nearly four years since Smith was sacked by Wycombe and in the meantime he has been involved with the Youth Academy set-up at Fulham. The game against Wycombe was the first time he had been charge of Football League team since the infamous Peterborough 6 Wycombe 3 result back in September 1996.

After the friendly with Wycombe, Smith said "This time last week I was Academy Director at Fulham and I've got a great lifestyle while Palace are losing 6-0 to Millwall. Here we are a week later and we've got it down to 3-1." Smith, trying to look on the bright side of the result added "If Wycombe played Millwall they'd have a good chance of beating them". Smith added "I thought Wycombe were sharper and knowing Lawrie Sanchez as I do they would have had a very tough pre-season while our lads have spent three weeks in China".
