WHITTINGHAM
JOINS FROM POMPEY
(Thursday 22nd March 2001) 36 year old Guy Whittingham has joined Wycombe until the end of the season from Portsmouth on a free transfer. The 5 foot 10 inch striker had his contracted terminated by The Fratton Park club and Wycombe beat Swindon, Oldham and Yeovil Town to his signature. Whittingham will come in as additional cover for Andy Rammell who returned for the Reservesthis week. The signing comes less than 24 hours after Lawrie Sanchez brought in defender Chris Marsh from Walsall for £30,000. Whittingham, who is not cup-tied, has not played a First Team game since December when he came on for the last 14 minutes of Pompey's clash with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Earlier this season he had been on loan at Peterborough United and Oxford United, scoring on his only appearance while at Oxford and netting once during six appearances with Barry Fry's Posh. The fact that he's not cup-tied may give the striker a chance to avenge a 1992 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup, when Pompey lost on penalties. The ex-Army man has been in the professional game for 12 years following a move from Yeovil Town where he played against Wycombe in the non-League days. After being bought out of The Army by Portsmouth in the summer of 1989, Whittingham went on to make close to 200 appearances for Pompey with a goal ratio of just over one every two games. That record prompted a £1.2m move to Aston Villa in August 1993 but a 15 month spell at Villa Park, that included time on loan with Wolves, never turned into the dream move predicted. In December 1994 a £700,000 fee took Whittingham to Sheffield Wednesday and in a four and a half year spell he scored 22 League goals in 103 appearances. His time at Hillsbrough included more loan moves, returning again to Wolves, back to Portsmouth and a month at Watford at the end of the 1998/99 season. A permanent move back to Fratton Park materialised in the summer of 1999 and during the following season he made 25 League appearances for Portsmouth (10 of those from the bench), scoring four times. His time at Fratton Park this season has seen him drafted in as temporary Assistant Manager alongside Steve Claridge. The two players may now be lining up alongside each other when Claridge's new Club, Millwall, visit Adams Park on Tuesday (27th March). Speaking of the move on 1170am Blues News, Whittingham said "I was at Portsmouth as Player/Assistant Manager with Steve Claridge and kept myself fit playing Reserve team games. I'm looking forward to getting back into First Team football now and have scored goals wherever I've gone, I've the confidence to do that, and I hope I get the chance to do that here" Return to News Desk... |
