The FA Youth Cup
Match winner Peitro Giambrone after the final whistle at Adams Park A stoppage time goal from Peitro Giambrone saw Wanderers Under 18's edge through their FA Youth Cup First Round tie with Gravesend & Northfleet at Adams Park. The game, played in sometimes torrential conditions, looked to be heading for extra-time after a goalless 90 minutes where Wycombe had slightly the better of the chances. Andy Savage also saw a penalty saved on the stroke of half-time after Sam Tucknott had been tripped in the box. It was left for Ikechi Anya to send in a stoppage time cross from the right that recently signed First Year apprentice Giambrone volleyed in from close range much to the delight of his team mates. Ian Culverhouse's side will now host Bournemouth in a Second Round tie to be played on Thursday 24th November (kick-off 7pm).
The tie was always going to be a test for Wanderers with Gravesend & Northfleet coming to Adams Park boasting a full-time Youth system and coached by former Wanderer Paul McCarthy. Meanwhile, Wanderers were missing key personel due through injury in the form of defenders Lewis Christon and Craig Roberts, while striker James Faulkner was also sidelined.
Andy Willis sends a free-kick just wide for the visitorsIt was the visitors who had the early chances with Andy Willis sending a free-kick just wide and Luke Moore also going close within the opening ten minutes. Wanderers responded with a great chance for Savage on 12 minutes after the striker latched onto a defensive error but he pulled his final shot wide of the left hand upright. There was also no luck for Savage four minutes later when he could only stick out a leg and deflect Anya's cross from the right channel wide of the far post.
At the other end Lee Maskell forced Dean Thornton to tip over on 19 minutes before the heavens opened in what turned out to be an almost constant downpour for the next hour or so. During that spell the game understandably took on a different style but it was Wycombe who spurned a golden opportunity to take the lead on the stroke of half-time - Savage seing his spot kick saved to the 'keepers right after Tucknott had been felled on the left edge of the box by Jim Beauchamp.
The second period saw tired legs creep up on many of the players with the visitors looked the side more likely to break the deadlock. However, it was Tom Cadmore in the centre of the Wycombe defensive who did a decent patrolling job to quell the visitors threats while Wycombe struggled to create any serious chances on goal.
Wanderers players celebrate the late winnerNorth substitute Chris Eather headed wide at the far post following a free-kick from the left as Wycombe looked grateful to hold on until what looked like the inevitable extra-time and possible penalty shoot-out. Then, with the officials having indicated three minutes of stoppage time, it was in the second of those that Anya finally got in a decisive ball and former Watford youngster Giambrone smashed home the ball. The final whistle sounded shortly after the restart to confirm Wycombe's passage to the Second Round.
