Jamie McClurg in the Wanderers midfield The Wanderers' Under 19's went down 2-1 to Brentford in their opening "Merit Division" match of the 2002/3 season. This was always going to be a tough game against a relatively more experienced Bees side and injuries had also reduced Wanderers to just 14 fit players available for selection. Wanderers side was made up entirely of 1st and 2nd year scholars with the expection of Jack Smillie who was playing despite his imminent departure from the Wanderers Youth set-up. Wycombe also included 17 year old Jamie McClurg in midfield after the ex-Finchampstead player agreed a professional deal with Wycombe after he impressed as a triallist since being spotted last November.
Wanderers conceded a soft goal early on when a looping shot from the right side of the penalty area beat Tom Gott in the Wycombe goal. However, the Wanderers youngsters got themselves back into the game and drew level on 32 minutes when Leon Gordon headed home into the far corner of the net after Mark Philo had headed on Matty Warner's free-kick from midfield.
The winning goal came ten minutes into the second half when Bees hot prospect Rob Traynor crossed from the right for Dominic Gucci to fire home.
Final Score Wycombe 1 Brentford 2
Wycombe: Tom Gott, Jack Smillie (sub 74 Luke Oliver), Matty Warner, Jamie McClurg, Stuart Hole, Andy Reilly, Rob Tungatt (sub 61 James Rogers), Mark Philo, Billy Harding, Leon Gordon, Mark Boland (sub 74 Matty Fox)
