Wycombe Wanderers Ladies Football Team 2002-2003 Match report Wanderers Ladies v Southampton Saints Youth Sunday 2nd March 2003 Click here for Picture Gallery for this game Manager Graham Malcolm called on his players to take “passion, desire & belief” into their top of the table clash with Southampton Saints Youth and for 55 minutes that is exactly what they did, but in the end the youngsters ran out 4-1 winners. Blues broke up the visitors kick off routine and ran the ball down the left, winning a throw. Su Oakley shot from Helen Scourfield’s throw, the keeper spilled the ball and Leah Asante and Karyn Atkinson got the vital touches that put Wycombe ahead in the opening minutes. We couldn’t have hoped for a better start and all over the pitch players battled for every ball to match the league leaders. Player of the Match Esther Morley had the defence well-organised and caught the visitors offside a couple of times early in the half as they chased an equaliser. In the end it was a well delivered corner that caught Blues flat footed and allowed a free header between keeper Lou Plumridge and centre half Marion Lyon to bring the scores level on 35 minutes. Another corner, only moments later was confidently punched clear and a counter attack launched. Sophy Bowden’s freekick 25 yards out was well saved at the near post and Saints hit the bar and had the rebound cleared giving both teams good chances for a second goal before the break. Jane Graddon came on for the injured Jeunine Bray on the right of midfield, and had a chance to put Blues back in the lead as she picked up a loose ball 8 yards out after good work from Atknison, Oakley and Jenny Kitley, but could only steer her shot straight to the keeper. Southampton brought on an academy player or two for the last half hour, just as Blues legs were starting to look tired and gaps began to appear at the back. Lyon stepped up when she should have gone back and the flicked header left too much ground to make up; Saints made no mistake in converting the chance. Nic Thorne came on for Elo Revans who’d had a solid performance at right back and Stephanie Dean for Sophy Bowden on the left, but the pace we started the game with was gradually ebbing away and our shape suffered. Pushing forward to try and grab an equaliser inevitably left gaps and the last 20 minutes saw the visitors tuck away another two goals on the break to give a final score of 1-4.
