WANDERERS YOUTH TEAM ROUND-UP - August/September 2001 The Football League Youth Alliance
Gary Goodchild - picture Paul LewisIt has been a mixed start to the 2000/2001 campaign for The Wanderers' Youth Teams. Two straight victories for the Under 19's (away to Brighton and at home to Southend) were followed with defeats to strong sides from QPR and Portsmouth. The team then bounced back with a 5-4 victory at Brentford.

Youth Team boss Gary Goodchild has been philosophical about the results, saying "At this level it is a learning process and our young players will have and lows. Those who can show resillence to come back from the lows and go on to consistently give performances of a high level, will go on to have the chance of a career in the game"

Lewis Cook Goodchild has seen Leeyon Phelan continue his good form in front of goal and will hope that he gets more First Team opportunities during his final year as a scholar with The Wanderers' Youth set-up. Second Year scholars Jonny Dixon and Lewis Cook have also got on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile the Under 17's have also had mixed fortunes. An impressive 3-1 victory over Gillingham on the opening day of the season being followed by three defeats, a draw and another win. Striker Leon Gordon is starting to make a name for himself with three goals so far. The mix of results can be partly put down to the varied selection of players available to Coach John Nolan. He has to deal with regulars being called up to play for the Under 19's because of injuries, First Team requirements or loans. Third Year 'keeper Steve Williams is one of those loan players having gone out to Beaconsfield. This has meant a chance at a higher level for First Year 'keeper Tom Gott

October sees the start of the FA Youth Cup and Wanderers have been drawn away to Canvey Island in the 1st Round. The tie is due to take place on Wednesday 24th October - kick-off 7.30pm. After going out at this stage to Brighton last season, all those connected with the team are hoping for an extended run similar to the 1999/2000 campaign which ended in the Fourth Round with defeat to Newcastle United at St James Park.
