season of injury hell continued even before a ball was kicked against QPR in
this Avon Insurance Combination match. Reserve 'keeper Mark Westhead broke his
wrist in the warm-up and Youth Team 'keeper Steve Williams was called upon to play 90 minutes.
There were more injury problems in the 22nd minute when left-back John Nutter was
forced off with an ankle problem.
Wycombe included 6 foot Roy Essandoh in their line-up. The 25 year Belfast born striker
has most recently made a couple of substitute appearances for Rushden and Diamonds having seen previous service with East Fife and Motherwell plus a three year spell playing in Finland. He has also been on trial at Luton and was on the bench during The Hatters recent reserve outing to Adams Park. Wycombe are just taking a look at Essandoh on a trial basis but he didn't get the service in this game to show any potential to the onlookers.
Meanwhile a strong Rangers side included First Teamers Danny Maddix and Paul Murray, both
returning from injury and the game
was barely 30 seconds old before Michel Ngonge had slipped the ball past
Williams. With Wanderers having lost 7-1 to The R's last season another
thrashing looked on the cards but Terry Gibson's side held out and could have grabbed a share
of the spoils with a little more luck.
Williams had an encouraging display in goal but was thankful that his crossbar
came to his rescue in the 42nd minute from Maddix's free-kick. In a game of few
chance it was Maddix who wasted a golden opportunity in the dying moments of the
game when he took the ball around defender and 'keeper before seeing his effort
denied by the toe of Roger Johnson.
Wycombe's best efforts came first in the 21st minute when Peter Holsgrove pushed
the ball out left to Matt Brady
only for his shot to be turned away for a corner and then in the final minute
when Scott Dash dragged a shot just wide of the Rangers goal.
New Rangers boss Ian Holloway was in the stands after his move to Loftus Road on Monday. Rangers had been refused permssion to talk to Lawrie Sanchez the previous week and ex-Rangers player Holloway was the eventual choice to try and lead the Club away from the threat of relegation from Division one.
