A run of six consecutive League victories at the end of the 2000/2001 campaign saw the
Wycombe Wanderers Ladies finish runners-up in the Northern Division of the
Southern Regional Women's Football League for
the second consecutive year. Champions were Carterton
Rangers who finished four points clear of The Wanderers with 40 points from their sixteen game League programme. The Wanderers Ladies have been formed for well over ten years now but since their formation a definite pyramid structure in Women's football has developed. Similar to the mens non-League game, this allows promotion through various regional divisions right through to the AXA FA Premier National Division, which in 2000/2001 was won by Arsenal. Below this league is two regional divisions which in turn is fed by four regional combinations. The Wanderers are two rungs in the ladder below the combinations but they are now hoping they can achieve promotion to the Southern Regional Premier Division although they will have to wait until a league meeting in mid-June. Premier League and Football League clubs are now being actively encoraged to raise the profile of their ladies team and at Fulham this meant going full-time for the 2000/2001 season. They won the South East Combination with a 100% record from their twenty League games and are sure to make inroads in the FA Premier next season as they continue to attract the better players away from the part-time clubs. In stark contrast The Wanderers' Ladies are strictly amateur, do not have a shirt sponsor and rely on donations to fund their matchday expenses. However, there was an unexpected bonus last season when they picked up a complimentry second kit after some of the team appeared on a TV advert for washing powder with Julian Clarey. With May designated a rest month, the team held their annual presentation night held at Thatcham Town FC on Saturday 19th May where individual awards were made to the outstanding players of the 2000/2001 season. Su Oakley added the Division's "Golden Boot" award with her 47 league and cup goals this year to her club top scorer award. Other Club prizes were awarded to the following players: Players' Player of the Year - Helen Scourfield Manager's Player of the Year - Heather Scutchings Most Improved Players - Heather Scutchings & Kim Maoate Summer training starting again in June. Squad training takes place Tuesdays 7.30-9pm and skills workshops for players aged 10 and upwards, beginners and those looking to improve their skills, Mondays 7-8pm both at Wye Valley school. Some weeks there will be friendly matches at other venues, so always check before turning up on spec. See the contact details opposite. Return to Latest News >>> |
