Triallist John Nutter appeared again for the Wanderers and it was after good work from the ex-Blackburn youngster that Wycombe took the lead in the 16th minute. Nutter forced a corner on the left which Brown centred for McCarthy to head home at the far post. Wycombe doubled the lead in the 28th minute with an almost carbon copy goal. This time it was Roger Johnson heading home at the far post from Brown's corner. Matt Brady could have made it 3-0 a minute later when sent through by Brown but he shot straight at the James Mercer in the United goal. The game began to get physical three minutes before the break when Adam Tann took out Brown while a stoppage time challenge on Martyn Lee on the far side ended with the Wycombe player being carried off. In the confusion following the loss of Lee, McCarthy was caught out at the back and Luke Gutteridge was allowed space to place a low shot past Mark Westhead. Half-time Wycombe 2 Cambridge 1 Peter Holsgrove replaced Lee at the half-time break with the news from the dressing room that Lee's injury was not serious. Wycombe regained their two goal advantage in the 59th minute following a foul on Senda - Brown curling home the free-kick from a central position just outside the Cambridge penalty area. With Johnson having an exceptional game in the centre of defence alongside McCarthy, it was a lead that Wycombe were not going to throw away. The nearest the visitors came to getting back into the game came in the 69th minute when Gutteridge was denied by a full stretch save from sub 'keeper Mark Osborn. There were three bookings in the closing 15 minutes as the tackles continued to fly in - Townsend for Wycombe and Franco Nacca and Martin McNeil for United. Wycombe could have capped their victory in the final minute when Mo Harkin neatly flicked the ball through to Senda whose finish didn't have enough on it to take it over Mercer's head. Final Score Wycombe 3 Cambridge 1
