Brighton & Hove Albion 5
Wednesday 20th September 2000
Keith Ryan - back in action - picture Paul DennisKeith Ryan returned to action for the first time since a brief run out in his own testimonial but it was an unhappy afternoon for Terry Gibson's Reserve XI as they lost 5-1 to Brighton.
'Rhino' ha
d been out of serious action since the tail end of last season with a knee problem coupled with a niggly calf strain. He joined a fairly strong looking Wycombe line-up but they were totally overrun by the visitors on a skiddy Adams Park surface.
Ryan
, obviously lacking match fitness, was substituted midway through the second half and his plight wasn't helped by cut to his shin, picked up during the first half.
The Seagulls were on top for most of the game and ex-Shrewsbury leading scorer Lee Steele caused most of the problems - missing two good chances before finally putting the visitors ahead in first half stoppage time. Steele latched onto a poor back pass by Martyn Lee before taking the ball around Mark Westhead in the Wycombe goal
.
Wycombe's best effort in the opening half came ten minutes before the break when Lee's attempted chip sailed marginally high of The Seagulls crossbar.
Half-time Wycombe 0 Brighton 1
It was 2-0 ten minutes into the second-half when Jason Cousins clipped the heels of Scott Ramsay and ex-Watford and Carlisle striker
Rod Thomas stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. Two minutes later The Seagulls added a third when Thomas cut inside from the left before striking past Westhead. Then Steele got his second and Brighton's fourth when he glanced in a Mark Jackson cross from the left. Wycombe scored their consolation goal in the 71st minute. Danny Senda first forced a good save from Dutch 'keeper Michel Kuipers but shortly afterwards he ran onto Lee's cross from the left to strike cleanly past the ex-Bristol Rovers 'keeper.
Matt Brady should have pulled another one back for Wycombe three minutes later when he skied the ball over from no more than six yards after good work from Youth prospect Leeyon Phelan. Any thoughts of a late Wycombe comeback were dashed when Steele completed his hat-trick in the 79th minute - running through from midfield before shooting past Westhead.
