Nationwide League Division Two WYCOMBE v Oxford Utd
Saturday 12th February
Division Two
Wycombe slumped to a thoroughly disappointing and equally depressing defeat to Oxford United at Adams Park on Saturday. It was all one-way traffic towards the Oxford goal until Joey Beauchamp broke the deadlock on 26 minutes with a fortunate goal when the ball broke kindly to him after a run into the Wycombe box. The goal had an alarming effect on Wycombe and with Oxford seemingly happy to defend for the majority of the game, they had no problem in containing Wycombe's front line and could have added a second towards the end.
Before the game, Wycombe fans would have been delighted to see Sean Devine in the starting line-up after last week's injury scare, although Lawrie Sanchez took the option of not giving starts to Wrexham goal heroes Matt Brady and Danny Senda. The other goalscorer at Wrexham, Dave Carroll, was termed 'Better then Pele' by SkyTV's SoccerAM earlier in the day for his free-kick at Wrexham, but he'll want to forget game where he struggled to get involved.
Wycombe could have been 3-0 up before United scored. Andy Baird forced a superb reaction save from Lundin after 7 minutes when Devine cleverly chipped the ball in from the left bye-line. It was at this point that United looked all at sea in defence. On 11 minutes Keith Ryan's low shot from just outside the box was saved low to the Oxford 'keepers right and six minutes later a Devine cross from the left set up a glorious chance for Cousins, but the Wycombe defender sliced the ball wide. The winning goal came when a series of Oxford passes ended with Beauchamp running towards the centre of a packed Wycombe defence, the ball breaking kindly to the Oxford player before he tucked the ball past Martin Taylor. It was the U's first goal in over 500 minutes. Wycombe failed to react in any significant way to the set-back, Keith Ryan's snap shot on 33 minutes being the loan effort for the remainder of the first half.
Half-time Wycombe 0 Oxford 1
Wycombe continued to add to their catalogue of wayward shots during the second-half. Eight minutes into the second period a Dave Carroll free-kick ended in the Valley End. In the 56th minute Matt Lawrence put the ball across the face of the goal but Brown somehow managed to misjudge his header and ended up clashing with United's reserve 'keeper Richard Knight. A rare United foray saw Craig Russell, on loan from Man City, force Taylor to save at the second atempt. Simpson blazed over after Ryan's initial shot was blocked in the 74th minute before Sanchez threw Brady and Bulman into the action. The closest Wycombe came to equalising came with ten minutes of normal time left when Devine looped in header that went fractionally wide of the far post. United nearly nicked another goal in the 84th minute when Beauchamp's long range free-kick from the right wing was tipped around the far post by Taylor.
Wycombe could probably have played all night and never scored - it was just one of those days. Wycombe are now 12th in the table with the next game away to Brentford next Saturday (12th February).
