Nationwide League Division Two WYCOMBE v Notts County
Friday 21st April 2000
Division Two
Sean Devine - 23rd league of the season - pic Paul DennisWycombe eased past a lethargic Notts County side by two goals to nil on Good Friday at Adams Park but had to rely on the visitors to gift the chance of the opening goal five minutes before the break.
With Keith Ryan and Steve Brown rested, Matt Brady and Jermaine McSporran came into the side that beat Colchester the previous week. McSporran was in the action almost immediately when he sent through Sean Devine within two minutes of the start but Wycombe's top scorer was shut-out by the County defence. Devine was on-fire during the first-half. On four minutes his long range shot from the the left side skidded along the slippery surface but was straight at County 'keeper Paul Gibson. Fifteen minutes later Devine skipped past three County defenders but his flicked left foot shot didn't have enough pace to beat Gibson.
A Duane Darby shot in the 27th minute was County's first serious effort on goal but Martin Taylor was down quick to avert the danger. McSporran almost caught County on the break after 36 minutes as the visitors protested for a foul by Dannie Bulman just outside of the Wycombe penalty area. McSporran pulled that effort wide but County finally conceeded five minutes before the interval. The visitors fed the ball back to Gibson but the County 'keeper cleared weakly and when Devine nipped in ahead of Alex Dyer, the Wycombe striker showed why he's amongst the top scorers in the division by clinically taking the ball into the area and screwing the ball low past Gibson and into the County net for a rare right-footed goal. The lead could have been doubled two minutes later when Bulman's through ball found Devine but this time Gibson save well at the near post.

Matt Brady should have put Wycombe two-nil up six minutes into the second-half when he was presented with the whole goal to aim at from Michael Simpon's right-wing corner but Brady, now playing in a three man attack, struck the ball wide.
County's best spell followed with Darby heading over from a right-wing cross from Craig Ramage on 53 minutes. Nine minutes later Darby blazed over from no more than ten yards from Gary Owers centre. County brought on ex-Wanderer Mark Stallard for the final 25 minutes but he made little impact and it was Wycombe who sealed victory in the 77th minute. Another delightful through ball from Bulman found McSporran down the Wycombe left and although Devine was ready to support. 'Jock' had other thoughts as he cooly curled the ball past Gibson from just inside the County box.
County could have reduced the deficit two minutes later when a scramble in the Wycombe box saw Taylor make a brilliant point blank save before the ball ricocheted for a goal-kick. Wycombe looked comfortable, however, and even when Darby eventually got the ball into the Wycombe net, it was ruled out for offside.
