NATIONWIDE Division Two Notts County v WYCOMBE
Saturday 16th October
Division Two
Mark Stallard - Regular scorer at County since leaving Wycombe last March missed game due to injury - picture with kind permission of Paul Dennis - see belowWycombe's run of three games unbeaten came to an end against managerless Notts County on Saturday. County were shocked in the week when Manager Sam Allardyce resigned but his assistant Gary Brazil must have been delighted with their 2-1 success against a Wycombe side reduced to ten men in the 81st minute when Matt Lawrence saw red.
With ex-Wycombe striker Mark Stallard missing from the County line-up through injury it was Wycombe who took the lead against the run of play through a 19th minute penalty when Sean Devine crossed from the left and Jermaine McSporran was pushed at the far post by Dennis Pearce. The County protests were waved away before Devine side footed the spot-kick home. Earlier Andy Hughes and Duane Darby had gone close for an attack minded County. However, the goal unsettled County and Wycombe enjoyed their best spell of the game. Michael Simpson should have made more of a Devine pass on 38 minutes and just before the 45 minute mark a first time effort from McSporran, after Cousins bravely headed on a corner, could have extended Wycombe's lead. But in a game spoilt by several lengthy stoppages for head injuries, it was four minutes into first-half stoppage time that County forced an equaliser - Pearce crossing from the right before, Darby headed the ball back at the far post and Man City loan player Nick Fenton forced the ball home from close range.
Half-time County 1 Wycombe 1
Four minutes into the second-half the heavily bandaged Ian Richardson headed County into the lead following a left wing corner by Andy Hughes. Minutes later Richardson had to leave the field after a clash of heads with McSporran. This time it was McSporran who continued complete with head gear. However, Wycombe never really put enough pressure on the home goal and a 64th minute header from Paul Emblen proved the nearest effort but Darren Ward punched it wide. Danny Jamie Bates and Michael Simpson picked up bookings before Lawrence was harshly sent-off for a foul on Ramage. Mark Rogers was introduced in the 78th minute for his Football League debut and didn't let the side down with a couple of good clearances and passes. County could have increased their winning margin in the closing stages as Wycombe threw bodies forward. To complete a bad day for Wycombe, Terry Gibson was sent down the tunnel after he had encroached onto the pitch in stoppage when he had objected to another decision by referee Neale Barry.
