NATIONWIDE Division Two Bury v WYCOMBE
Saturday 18th September
Division Two
Wycombe lost their unbeaten away record this season when they traveled to Gigg Lane on Saturday to play 11th placed Bury. A poor second-half performance saw Wycombe slump to a 2-0 defeat against Neil Warnock's side. There were two changes to the side that drew at West Brom in the week - Jason Cousins deputising for Paul McCarthy, who was injured during midweek training and Paul Emblen was favoured in place of Andy Baird.
Wycombe matched the home side for the first 45 minutes but after falling behind to a 52nd minute goal from Andy Preece, The Wanderers rarely threatened to take a share of the points. To make matters worse, Martin Taylor had to leave the pitch with a suspected hamstring problem on the hour mark. Bury wrapped the game up in the 88th minute when Bury substitute Darren Bullock stroked the ball past reserve 'keeper Mark Westhead.
Wycombe's best chances came in the first half. On 13 minutes Paul Emblen failed to lift the ball past the Bury 'keeper after Michael Simpson had supplied inside the box. Sean Devine also had a glorious chance five minutes before the break when a one on one with Paddy Kenny in the Bury goal ended when Devine was pushed wide. Bury came closest on 29 minutes when Paul Reid saw his 15 yard effort hit the Wycombe cross-bar after he had got the better of Cousins.
The second-half started badly for Wycombe when Jason Cousins was knocked out after a collision with a Bury player inside the Wycombe box. Cousins, who picked up a facial cut in the week playing for the reserves, eventually picked himself up and carried on. Bury's opening goal came from a quick break down the left wing - the ball was crossed in by Read and headed in by Preece at the far post ahead of Jamie Bates. Martin Taylor was injured shortly afterwards as the day went from bad to worse. Bullock should have made it 2-0 on 75 minutes when he blasted wide from 12 yards before the home side sealed the game with two minutes left. Wycombe's display was summed up in the 90th minute when Emblen volleyed a good chance into the houses behind the Bury goal.
A real day to forget and Wycombe will need to improve on this display if they are to progress in the Worthington Cup against West Brom on Tuesday night.
