Football League 'League Two'
Kevin Betsy - made it 2-0 versus Wrexham - here he is about to shoot before Nathan Tyson made it 4-1 in the closing stages Wanderers romped to a 4-1 victory over Wrexham at Adams Park to remain in second spot in the table. With Sergio Torres in for the injured Rob Lee as the only change in the side from the previous Saturday's win at Mansfield, the scoring got underway on 16 minutes when Wrexham's 17 year old stand-in 'keeper Michael Jones allowed a through ball to bounce over his head and Nathan Tyson nipped in to finish with a cheeky low range header. Six minutes later it was 2-0 after Kevin Betsy took the ball around Jones having cut in from the right wing. Wanderers could have added more before Mark Jones' speculative shot from 25 yards on the right channel beat Frank Talia to make the score 2-1 on 54 minutes. However, any thoughts of a Wrexham comeback were killed off five minutes later when Tommy Mooney fired home from just inside the box following a through ball from Tyson. The evening was capped off for Wycombe in the 82nd minute when Betsy's shot was pushed away to the left of goal where Tyson was waiting to angle home his 11th League goal of the season..
Tommy Mooney makes the score 3-1 to Wycombe
Wrexham had come to Adams Park on the back of an injury crisis. Their youthful 'keeper was making just the second start of his professional career, while elsewhere Manager Dennis Smith claimed that he had eight of First Team squad unavailable due to injuries. Despite those set-backs it was on loan Liverpool forward Robbie Foy and 6'7" defender Dennis Lawrence who had a shot and header respetively shut out by the Wycombe defence within the opening 12 minutes. But after Tyson's and Betsy's goals on 16 and 22 minutes there were few worries for John Gorman's side. Mooney or Bloomfield coudl have extended the lead before the break, while four minutes after the restart Sergio Torres was unlucky again not to get on the scoresheet when he powered through from midfield before sending in a dipping shot that was tipped over by Jones in the Wrexham goal.
Tommy Mooney celebrates his goal versus WrexhamMark Jones' goal on 54 minutes gave brief hope to travelling faithful from Wales before Mooney's superb finish restored Wycombe's two goal cushion. Tyson saw a shot from the right channel pushed away by Jones on 65 minutes before Wrexham responded again with a brief spell of pressure. However, there were no last minute nerves this time around for the Wycombe support as Tyson proved again his potential as he pounced to complete the scoring on the night and confirm Wanderers third consecutive victory in 'League Two'.
With 11 games gone Wycombe are still unbeaten and two points behind current leaders Grimsby Town. The two sides meet on Friday 7th October at Blundell Park.
Final Score - Wycombe 4 Wrexham 1
Speaking to the Wanderers official website after the game, John Gorman said "We keep scoring goals and it was a tremendous performance from start to finish. But it was nice to see that Wrexham came to win the game and I thought it was a good advert for the league. They're a good little football team and Darren Ferguson is a very good player. It would have been nice for the result to have been 4-0 but they did well to score."
Meanwhile, Wrexham boss Dennis Smith admitted to being far from happy with his team's performance, commenting to their official website, "I don't often lose my temper but I did at half-time and then again at full-time. At 2-1 I thought they had gone so to concede a goal from a throw-in in their half of the pitch took some doing. Unfortunately, we seemed to be in a very generous mood this evening. We have only conceded nine goals so far this season but we could have conceded nine in this game alone." Smith added "We made it easy for Wycombe but it wasn't the younger players it was the more experienced ones. Some people will have a go at 'Carrots' (Michael Jones) for the first goal but he, along with Mike Williams and Jamie Reed, did well afterwards and showed some character."
John Gorman concluded that is was no coincidence how his team is playing at the moment, adding "We never slipped mentally tonight and the overall team has got so much strength. They played a high line and we knew we could get in and catch them out. Tommy Mooney deserved his goal because he was outstanding and you can't beat winning 4-1 at home."
