Carling Cup 1st Round |
Wanderers continued their encouraging start to the 2005/6 season with a 3-1 victory at The County Ground in the First Round of the Carling Cup. It was a performance that former Swindon boss John Gorman described as "awesome" after the game and was one of the best since he took over at Wycombe. Wanderers will now look forward to the Second Round which takes place week commencing 19th September.
As expected Gorman made two changes to the side that had beaten Bury at the weekend - the injured Matt Bloomfield and Joe Burnell being replaced by Rob Lee and Ian Stonebridge.
The duo were heavily in Wanderers opening goal on 12 minutes - Stonebridge turning in a Lee cross from the right. It came after Wycombe had gone at the home side from the first minute - Roger Johnson seeing a header well saved by Manchester United loanee 'keeper Tommy Heaton. Wanderers continued to dominate for the first 30 minutes but the home side gradually forced their way back into the game and after boo-boy target Tommy Mooney had been pulled up for offside on 56 minutes it was Swindon who broke and equalised with a 20 yard effort from 19 year old Michael Pook. However, just as Town sniffed a revival Wycombe turned the screw again and regained the lead four minutes later when a long clearance by Frank Talia connected with Nathan Tyson who turned the ball in from a narrow angle on the left ahead of Jerel Ifil. Substitute Jonny Dixon sealed the tie in the 74th minute when Clint Easton's free-kick was headed onto the post by Mike Williamson and Dixon was first to react and convert.
Final Score - Swindon 1 Wycombe 3
Speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio after the game John Gorman commented, "I'm absolutely delighted. It's an old stamping ground of mine and I was proud of my boys tonight. We used to play that kind of football when I was here as Manager and Assistant Manager." The Wycombe boss was also pleased how the good work on training pitch had been converted to a match situation, before adding "
The fans were maginificent tonight as well. I really enjoyed it tonight with the fans and the Swindon fans gave me good ovation, so it was a great night for me." Gorman also enthused over beating a team a division higher than his side, concluding "I don't know why we are in this League but we are. We got relegated but our League is a hard League to get out of. I've said to the boys if we can get up the League, then that type of football is probably more suited to the Championship, even more than the First Division (League One) but it's going to be hard to get out of this League and then out of the other League. But we are aiming to do that and we are trying to win every game that we play."
