Matchday Saturday 31st July 2004
Wycombe Wanderers 1
Millwall 3
Friendly
Wanderers went down 3-1 to Millwall at Adams Park in the penultimate pre-season friendly. In front of a sub 1,000 attendance Wycombe trailed 2-0 at the break following goals from Danny Dichio and Stefan Moore. Paul Ifill added a third just after the re-start before Shahmed Ahmed tapped in mid-way through the half for a consolation goal for the Wanderers. Team news for Wycombe saw Danny Senda make his first start after missing the earlier pre-season games due to knee problems. Keith Ryan remained out and will miss the opening League game versus Cambridge United on 7th August.
Before the game Wanderers' new signing Ian Stonebridge was introduced to the sparse crowd but the former Plymouth Argyle striker signed on a three year deal the previous day took no part in the game. Tony Adams said afterwards that he may give him a run out in the final pre-season friendly at Berkhamsted on Wednesday 4th August. The Wycombe boss also indicated that a further two signings could be brought in to bolster a thining squad prior to the start of the Football League campaign.
Against The Lions, Adams tried again with the bizarre partnership of Nathan Tyson and Scott Marshall up front while at the back it was a straight four. Tyson went close early on but Wanderers' defence was breached in the fifth minute when Danny Dichio volleyed home following a Peter Sweeney corner. Wanderers had no real clear cut chances and it was the visitors who doubled their lead a few moments before the break after another corner, this time from Jodie Morris, was converted from close range by Stefan Moore (Luke's brother about to start a three month loan spell with Millwall from Aston Villa).
Adams switched to a back three for the start of the second-half with Marshall dropping back to a more regular central defensive role. But it was Wanderers who conceded again six minutes after the re-start when Paul Ifill beat Frank Talia with a shot from the edge of the box as Marshall claimed for offside.
Wanderers' consolation came on 68 minutes when the ever busy Nathan Tyson crossed for substitute Shahed Ahmed to tap in. Marshall concluded the game as centre forward and missed a decent chance in the closing moments when he took the ball around the 'keeper and then mis-kicked his shot from a narrow angle.
