Dorchester Town 0
Wycombe Wanderers 3
Friendly |
Second-half goals saw Wanderers overcome Dorchester Town 3-0 on in the third pre-season friendly. The final result provided a welcome boost after a disappointing opening 45 minutes when a near full strength Wanderers line-up struggled to create any clear cut chances on a superb surface at Dorchester's impressive Avenue Stadium.
Wanderers' starting XI saw 'keeper Steve Williams make his first appearance of the pre-season programme. Williams missed the opening games as he was still recovering from the hand injury sustained in the Division Two game at Plymouth back in April. Fellow 'keeper Frank Talia also took place in the warm-up and will get his chance in the remaining friendlies.
Wanderers included triallists Sonny Ball and Russell Martin in the squad. Ball hails from the Wimbledon Youth Academy and looked comfortable again when he came on the replace Gus uhlenbeek in the right back role. Meanwhile, ex England Youth player Martin showed keenness in midfield in his brief time on the pitch. Stuart Nethercott paired up with Roger Johnson in the centre of defence with the ex-Millwall player expected to sign permanently for Wanderers before the start of the season.
New signing Clint Easton was given a run out during the first-half but having missed training during the week was taken off at the break. It was Easton's replacement Matt Fox who scored the match winning goal two minutes after the restart, the Wanderers youngster finding the target from around 20 yards when he placed the ball low to the 'keepers left after Joe Burnell's shot had been blocked. The goal seemed to spark Wycombe's confidence as Mark Philo and ex-Wimbledon trainee Shahed Ahmed continued to create problems for the home defence with their pace. It was Philo's cross from the right that saw Captain for the day Matt Bloomfield provide another decent finish on 69 minutes for the second goal. Then after an injection of further substitutes, the icing on the cake came on 73 minutes when pressure from Jonny Dixon led to Dorchester defender Mark Jermyn knocking the ball past his own 'keeper.
The friendlies continue on Tuesday 20th July with a home match with Portmsouth, kick-off 7.45pm.
