Cheltenham Town 1
Monday 3rd January 2005
Football League 'League Two'
Frank Talia - vital save against CheltenhamWanderers completed what has been a very disappointing holiday programme, results wise, with a 1-1 draw against Cheltenham Town on Monday at Adams Park. John Gorman made four changes to the side that had lost at Oxford on New Years Day with Stuart Nethercott and Matt Bloomfield appearing in a starting line-up for the first time under the new boss. However, in a tame first half it was the visitors who took the lead when a 37th minute free-kick from the left flank was spilled by Frank Talia and Gavin Caines snapped up the follow-up. Wanderers only serious efforts at goal in the opening 45 minutes came on 10 minutes when Danny Senda ran through from midfield before skidding a shot wide of the right hand post. While three minutes later Craig Faulconbridge shot wide from the right edge of the penalty area.

Wanderers improved in the second-half and eventually drew level on 70 minutes when Steve Guppy's cross from the left was headed home by Nathan Tyson. Earlier in the half Tyson had been denied by Town 'keeper Shane Higgs who came quickly off his line to block a 51st minute shot from the left flank before Tyson sent the loose ball wide of the far post from a narrow angle.
Senda picked out Gus Uhlenbeek down the right on 57 minutes with the resulting cross being deflected wide for a corner on the opposite wing. Uhlenbeek was pushed further forward a minute later when Mike Williamson replaced Bloomfield - Williamson filling the vacant right back role.
Tyson's leveller on 70 minutes prompted a frenetic closing period wher both sides had chances to win the game. On 83 minutes Tyson almost chipped Higgs in the Town goal from the right of the penalty area but the 'keeper recovered to get a vital hand to the ball. Town substitute Kayode Odejayi was given a golden opportunity to win the game in the 89th minute when a cross from the right fell to him at the far side of the six yard box with Wanderers left claiming for offside. Fortunately for Wycombe, Odejayi miskicked from around three yards, allowing Talia to scoop the ball away. Then in stoppage time Roger Johnson powered a header against the crossbar from a Guppy corner. While the final action saw Williamson make a briliant block to deny Brian Wilson from the left of the penalty area.
