Matchday Saturday 26th July 2003
Aylesbury United 0
Wycombe Wanderers 3
Friendly
Darren Currie Wanderers ended up comfortable winners in this relatively low-key friendly at Aylesbury. The game was played in three 30 minute periods presumably to give the respective managers a chance to experiment with their squads, although Wanderers didn't make any major changes until the final third.
The first thirty minute spell ended 0-0 with Wanderers having the better of the play but failing to find their feet in front of goal despite good wing play by Darren Currie and Jermaine McSporran. Wycombe eventually took the lead in the 56th minute when Darren Currie converted at the far post with his left foot following a cross from the right. Then on 58 minutes Charlie Mapes scored his first goal since signing for the Wanderers in the close season when he cut inside the Aylesbury defence and finished well.
Wanderers made several changes for the third and final period and made it 3-0 on 76 minutes when new loan signing Simon Patterson finished at the second attempt following a cross from the left by Lewis Cook.
Team news for the game saw Steve Williams start in goal after being left out the previous week in favour of veteran stand-in Dave Beasant. The home side barely troubled Williams and Third Year scholar Tom Gott was also given a run out in the final third of the match.
Youth Teamer Billy Harding was rewarded for his goal against Spurs with a start but new loan signing Simon Patterson replaced him up front after 45 minutes and after a relatively quiet start, celebrated him debut with a goal.
Triallist Barrie Matthews got another chance in a Wycombe shirt but defender Steve Dell was left as an unused sub. However, there was no return to the side for 6'5" striker Luke Fontana who failed to impress the Wycombe management gurus in the fifteen minutes he was given against Spurs the previous Saturday and has been told to look elsewhere for a club. Also central defender Will Antwi has decided to try his luck with Barnsley rather than with the Wanderers. Former QPR centre-half Karl Ready appeared in defence for Aylesbury having spent the pre-season training with Wycombe and opting to stay in non-League football.
All in all a relaxing workout for Wanderers in what amounted to little more than a glorified training session against a run of the mill Ryman League side.
