Wycombe Wanderers 0
Saturday 7th September 2002
Football League Division Two
Dannie Bulman
Darren Currie - no luck at Wigan.
Wanderers went down by three goals to nil at The JJB Stadium after Lawrie Sanchez stuck with his three-up policy in an unchanged line-up from the previous two games. However, the ambitious stance didn't pay off as Wanderers never recovered from conceding a third minute goal from Lee McCulloch. A strike from Andy Liddell in the 36th minute made the task even more difficult and although Sean Devine went close for Wycombe with a 65th minute header, it was Frank Talia who performed well to keep the score down. Andy Liddell added a third in stoppage time to confirm The Latics superiority on the day. Wanderers drop to 14th place in the table with 9 points from 7 games.
Wanderers ambitious formation of 4-3-3 forced a corner as early as the first minute but Wigan soon exposed the weakness in the Wanderers' defence when Green's thrown-in from the right came to Liddell who squared for McCulloch and an easy conversion from a couple of yards.
Wanderers best, albeit brief, spell of the game came shortly afterwards. First on 14 minutes Danny Senda's cross/shot from the right drifted over Latics 'keeper John Filan. A minute later Andy Rammell was presented with a glorious opening when he chested down Chris Vinnicombe's delivery from the left but the ball ran away and into the arms of Filan.
The killer blow came on 36 minutes when Wycombe defended poorly again from a throw-in, allowing Jason De Vos and Scott Green to combine to lay the ball back for Liddell who was on hand to score with a powerful shot.
Wycombe had a penalty claim turned away on the stroke of half time when Rammell was upended in the box but the officials weren't impressed.
Half-time Wigan 2 Wycombe 0
The second-half was a virtual non-event from Wycombe's point of view with a 65th minute near post header by Sean Devine being the closest Wycombe came to reducing the margin. Before that Steve McMillan had stormed down the left wing before unleashing an effort that smashed against Talis's cross-bar. The Aussie 'keeper also kept Wycombe in the game with several saves - the best coming in the 79th minute when he directed away a curling effort from Nathan Ellington.
By this stage Sanchez had changed things around with the introduction of Keith Ryan, Stuart Roberts and Richard Harris. It was Harris who had Wycombe's nearest effort in the closing stages when he headed just wide from Michael Simpson's corner from the right on 87 minutes.
Wigan added their third in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Green's pass down the right wing found Liddell who sprinted past the Wycombe defenders before tucking the ball inside the far post for his 5th League goal of the season.
