Football League Division Two |
Wanderers returned from Crewe having scored two goals but conceding four as they fell to a third successive defeat. Wycombe remain 13th place in the table but with 42 points from 35 games are now looking at the wrong end of the table once again.
Lawrie Sanchez made one change to the side that lost at Blackpool at the weekend, Keith Ryan returning after tonsillitis to replace Jermaine McSporran in the left wing back role. Up front Jonny Dixon partnered Craig Faulconbridge again.
In a hectic game Wanderers got off to a bad start when in the 8th minute Dean Ashton got past Mark Rogers following a knock on from the half-way line and cooly slotted past Frank Talia. However, Wycombe's response was immediate as within a minute Steve Brown had sent the ball out to Danny Senda on the right wing and his flighted cross to the far side of the six yard area was converted by Dixon in a manner that looked like he'd been playing in the Football League for years.
Wanderers were generally on the back foot and in the 14th minute Rodney Jack's cross from the right should have seen Ashton score his second but he mis-kicked twice in front of a grateful Talia. Danny Senda had a speculative effort saved on 20 minutes but Wanderers fell behind four minutes later after Ryan had clipped Jack on the right bye and Kenny Lunt sent Talia the wrong way from the resulting penalty. An unfit Ryan was replaced moments later by McSporran and Sanchez continued to change things in the 58th minute when Gavin Holligan was introduced for Faulconbridge. But any thoughts of a comeback were dashed in a three minute spell when first on 59 minutes Ashton pushed the ball left to David Vaughan who then squared to Neil Sorvel whose shot was blocked on the line by Michael Simpson before Rob Hulse finished the job from a couple of yards. Three minutes later it was 4-1 when Kenny Lunt was allowed to skip through the Wanderers defence again before delivering from the left side of the penalty area for Ashton to shot home from six yards and grab his second of the night.
To their credit Wycombe continued to press and pulled a goal back on 67 minutes when McSporran laid the ball across from the left wing for Danny Bulman to bobble a shot home from around 25 yards. Dixon went close to reducing arrears further late on but Wycombe were left too short on the night and will now look to Saturday's home game with Brentford to end this latest run of disappointing results.
