Nationwide Football League Division Two
Steve Brown - lively game after he came on - picture Paul DennisIf any more proof was needed that Wycombe are lacking sufficient strike power, then Tuesday's 2-0 home reverse to Cambridge United was the evidence. With Andy Rammell injured it was left to a makeshift frontline of Andy Baird and Keith Ryan to try and overcome an efficient United defence but after falling behind to a 19th minute headed goal from Richard Logan, Wycombe looked a tired and jaded side.
Wycombe's best spell came immediately after the break when Andy Baird should have done better with a couple of efforts while there were loud claim for a penalty when Gerard Lavin's cross was blocked by the hands of John Dreyer.
Jason Cousin's diving header hit the cross-bar from Michael Simpson's free-kick on the hour mark but the visitors confirmed their first ever victory at Adams Park nine minutes later when top scorer Tom Youngs swept the ball past Martin Taylor from Logan's cross.
The game saw a rare start for Stewart Castledine in midfield but Wycombe never came alive until Steve Brown replaced the ex-Dons man early in the second-half. Within seconds of being on the field 'Brownie' played a neat through ball to Baird but U's 'keeper Lionel Perez dashed out of his area to intercept. Baird ended up on the deck but there was no contact despite some rather lame claims for a free-kick. Wycombe had more of case when Lavin's cross smacked Dreyer's hands but again a penalty would have been harsh. The U's managed to scramble the ball away after Cousin's header had hit the crossbar but any chances of a comeback were snuffed out when Young's made it 2-0.
Brown's ski-rocket in the 71st minute told the story of this game and it's now onto Oxford on Saturday where The Wanderers will have a chance to bounce back and complete the double over United.
