Nationwide Footie Facts OPTA Nationwide Football League Division Two
Team of the Week 15 April 2000
Mark Gayle (Bury v CHESTERFIELD): Playing for Chesterfield this season has been something of a poisoned chalice, and goalkeeper Mark Gayle has certainly tasted sour defeat too often. Still, he earned his side a futile point at Bury with a series of stupendous saves in the northern drizzle. He denied the Shakers eight times, conceding just one goal in the process. Opta points score: 1,735

Mark McGregor (WREXHAM v Bournemouth): While Ewan McGregor has played a heroin addict and a Jedi Knight in his career; Wrexham's Mark McGregor has stuck to being a competent right back for the Welsh side. His foraging down the flank is usually productive and he whipped in five crosses in the Robins 1-0 win over Bournemouth. And the force was with him as he careered into seven tackles, winning six of them. Opta points score: 1,242

Barry Hunter (Notts County v READING): Burly Barry Hunter was in impressive form as the Royals travelled to Nottingham and secured their seventh win in 10 games. His powerful body cleared the ball 18 times as the Magpies tried to pummel the visitors from Berkshire. He then trundled upfield and helped to create Nicky Forster's opening goal. His fist-shaking celebrations with the away fans were something to behold. Opta points score: 1,189

Matt Redmile (NOTTS COUNTY v Reading): Barry Hunter's defensive partner in the Opta XI is someone from the same game, rangy Matt Redmile. The County stroller was by far the busiest defender on the pitch, clambering through legs to clear the ball 18 times, and making 10 turf-tearing tackles. After such a whole-hearted display, defeat will be hard to swallow for the 6'3" gentle giant. Opta points score: 1,076

Roland Edge (GILLINGHAM v Wigan Athletic): Gillingham are still on the edge of the play-offs, after an edgy victory over Wigan at Priestfield. Only part of the new stand at the ground was open for the first time on Saturday, fans having to sit on the edge of the recent construction. And Gills' defender Roland Edge was a key figure in the victory, surging up the field to aide his comrades. Opta points score: 812

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Adrian Littlejohn (BURY v Chesterfield): Pint-sized whippet Adrian Littlejohn ran and ran at bottom club Chesterfield on Saturday. He was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet too, firing four efforts on target but seeing all of them palmed away by goalkeeper of the week, Mark Gayle. He has endured an inconsistent season at Gigg Lane, but he will know that there is always a chance of a return to Bramall Lane and a meeting with his arch-mentor Neil Warnock. Opta points score: 1,097

Gary Owers (NOTTS COUNTY v Reading): Crafty midfield enforcer Gary Owers may have eaten from the trough of defeat on Saturday but he can be delighted with his own personal performance in the game with Reading. In particular, his deliveries from wide were exceptional, and the Magpies' strikers really should have done better. Owers also blasted two stinging shots at Scott Howie, but to no avail. Opta points score: 1,253

Keith Ryan (WYCOMBE WANDERERS v Colchester United): Wycombe and Colchester have a keen rivalry, and this game was the first time that the Chairboys have managed to beat their old foes at Adams Park. And it was a sensational brace from club captain and legend Keith Ryan that helped them on their way. The blond powerhouse headed past Simon Brown after 62 minutes and then added another on 67. He pumped his arms in joy as the home fans danced in ecstacy. Opta points score: 1,105

Steve Brown (WYCOMBE WANDERERS v Colchester United): Wycombe's superiority over Colchester was so great the game needed a third Wanderers goal, and what a strike it was. Combative midfielder Steve Brown rifled home a screamer from 30 yards to cap a great day for Buckinghamshire's premier football club. His celebration lasted nearly a minute as he was swamped by his team-mates; the morose Essex hoards trudging away in the background. Opta points score: 797

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
John Taylor (Cardiff City v CAMBRIDGE UNITED): One of the most popular players ever to grace the Abbey Stadium, John Taylor all but guaranteed Division Two football for the U's next season with a superb hat-trick at Cardiff. His play was powerful and masterly, and the Welsh side had no answer to his boots of destiny. The fans that had made the trip west were in heaven as his penalty made it 3-0. Opta points: 1,752

Neil Harris (Brentford v MILLWALL): The second three-goal hero of the week is Millwall's rapier sharp hitman Neil Harris. He has progressed from playing such teams as Sittingbourne to the very brink of Division One. He had just four shots in the game, but 75 per cent of them were pure gold. He was also full of running and inventiveness as south London's keenest team battered Ron Noades's sorry bunch. Opta points score: 1,829
