Burnley
v Wycombe
Division Two
Saturday 4th December 1999
In the hot August sun Wycombe took the lead against Burnley thanks to a Jermaine McSporran screamer in the first-half. But Stan Ternant shuffled his extensive pack and forced a draw. Since that day Wycombe have been inconsistent, capable of giving most teams a good game, but liable to leak goals at inopportune moments.
Burnley have been far stronger and look like being in the frame for promotion at the end of the season. Much of this success is based on their miserly defence and the acquisition of
Mitchell Thomas from Luton was a masterstroke.
The big stopper has been commanding this season, having won exactly half of his 56 tackles. Wycombe's ex-Claret
Chris Vinnicombe, similarly left-footed, has been less accurate, but he has made one last ditch tackle to save the Chairboys.
Thomas has a superior pass completion as well, and has been heavily involved in build-up lay for the Lancashire side. But the Wycombe man has played for just half as many minutes this season, due to a combination of injury and competition with Alan Beeton. He seems worth his place though; having committed just eight fouls all campaign. However, in a battle against his former club he might just be fired up enough to open his goalscoring account for the Blues.
