Friendly

A 75th minute penalty converted by Marcus Forss was enough for Brentford to secure a 1-0 victory over Wanderers in a pre-season friendly on a warm evening at Adams Park. Wycombe's second pre-season match, following their narrow defeat to West Ham the previous Saturday, proved another experimental session for Manager Gareth Ainsworth who again used a different starting XI in each half and included three of the five triallists used in the meeting with The Hammers. Former Hartlepool striker Tomi Adeloye was used in the first half, while defenders Charlie Fox and Ben Femprah got their chance in the second period - see pictures below in the new Wycombe kit revealed for the 2018/19 season.

Other team news for Wanderers saw new signing Darius Charles again miss out with injury, while Paris Cowan-Hall and Scott Kashket were reported to have picked up 'minor knocks' and were subsequently rested for the meeting with the 'Championship' side.

Wycombe started brightly against The Bees and triallist Adeloye had the ball in the net for Wanderers in the 7th minute when he struck home Michael Harriman's cross but the 'goal' was ruled out for a marginal offside. At the other end Yves Ma-Kalamby saved well from Romaine Sawyers on 35 minutes before Harriman fired wide just before the break from an Adebayo Akinfenwa pass.

The second-half saw triallist Fox introduced and he went close on a couple occassions for Wycombe but will probably think he should have done better with both attempts. Nathan Tyson also looped a header just high of the target before Ryan Allsop impressed in the Wycombe goal with a couple of decent saves.

The visitors made wholesale changes with twenty minutes remaining. Of those substitutes former Wanderers loanee Nico Yennaris was introduced to play against former Brentford team-mate Sam Saunders. But it was the fresh legs of the visitors who eventually grabbed victory when Harriman brought down Moses Odubajo and Forss knocked the resulting penatly into the corner of the Valley End net. Saunders had a late chance to equalise for Wanderers but shot high of the target. Wycombe now travel to three non-League sides to conclude their pre-season programme before starting the Football League season at home to Blackpool on saturday 4th August 2018.

Speaking after the game, Wanderers Manager Gareth Ainsworth told the press: "I’m pleased. They moved it really well and they’re a good side, but especially in the first half it was quite even and I thought there were two good teams going at it. I look at it as having had two good workouts and now we’re going into these next three [pre-season friendlies] which will be a little different and we’re looking to add some goals to our game. This is where we’ll start putting tactics into place, which has been harder to do in these first two matches, but we’re getting ready for the new season and workouts like this one will help us in terms of fitness." The Wycombe boss concluded: "It’s not all about that first game [versus Blackpool on 4th August], believe me. It’s a long season and everyone will play their part. It’s about more than just the starting eleven. I have to make sure we’re ready as a squad to do what no Wycombe side has done for a long time, and that’s retain 'League One' status."
