Wycombe Wanderers 4
Southend United 1
Saturday 13th December 2014
Football League Two

Matt McClure - two goals against Southend - first since August 2014 Wanderers bounced back from their FA Cup defeat to Wimbledon with an emphatic 4-1 victory over in-form Southend United at Adams Park. The win came after going a goal down inside the opening 90 seconds and against a side who had won their previous four League games.

Team news for Wanderers saw a welcome back for Paris Cowan-Hall and Alfie Mawson after their absence the previous week - replacing Matt Bloomfield and Max Kretzschmar, while Matt McClure was favoured upfront in place of Steven Craig.

Thoughts of a comfortable victory were far from the minds of Wycombe fans after Jack Payne had angled in Myles Weston's cross from the right to give the vistitors the lead. But Wanderers dig deep again and levelled on 32 minutes when Aaron Pierre chested down a long ball into the path of Cowan-Hall who smashed home from around 12 yards. Wycombe would have settled for that at the break but in first-half stoppage time a low ball in from the left by Sam Wood was turned home by McClure for his first goal since August.

Phil Brown's side pressed during the early stages of the second period but suffered a set-back on the hour mark when Jerome Williams was shown a stright red card for lunge on Josh Scowen. Wanderers took advantage six minutes later when Joe Jacobson fighted in a free-kick into the top left corner of the Valley End net to make it 3-1. Not to be outdone, on 72 minutes McClure rifled home into a similar spot in the net to finish off the Essex side and confirm Wycombe's place at the top of the table as they head towards the holiday programme.

The result leaves Wycombe on 41 points from 20 games, ahead of 2nd placed Burton Albion (39 points, 21 games) who won 4-0 at home to Hartlepool, 3rd placed Shrewsbury (37 points, 20 games) who drew 0-0 at Cambridge and 4th placed Luton (37 points, 20 games) who lost 3-0 at Morecambe.
