Wycombe Wanderers 0 Newport County 1 Thursday 26th December 2013 Football League Two Wanderers' awful home League form for 2013/14 continued as they lost 1-0 in the early Boxing Day kick-off to Newport County. Mike Flynn's clever lob on 31 minutes was enough to beat an unchanged Wycombe starting XI and extended an winless home run that now stretches to six games in all competitions. Wycombe started brightly enough but eventually ran out of ideas up front and then saw Dean Morgan limp off just before the break with a suspected hamstring injury to be replaced by Matt McClure. It was McClure who had Wanderers best chance of an equaliser on 58 minutes when he found himself in space on the left side of the box but he was shut out by a defender and Marvin McCoy headed wide when the resulting loose ball was centred. Wycombe are now 15th in the table. Full-time - Wycombe 0 Newport 1
Post match reaction: Commenting after the game, Gareth Ainsworth said, "There weren't many chances in the whole game. Newport didn't create much, we didn't create much, but Newport took one of those, and that was the difference. We had a couple of good chances second half and didn't convert. It was a bitty game. The ball was in the air a lot and I didn't like that too much. But we go again Sunday. That's the important thing now. We always do well in adversity though, so hopefully we can do the David and Goliath thing, and we'll be victors over Fleetwood (29th December)." |
