'JONA' AND 'BIG TEL' SAY GOODBYE
Dave Jones rushes in to treat a rare injury to Michael Simpson The news of the imminent departure of Youth Team Physio Terry Evans and Club Sports Therapist Dave Jones came as a surprise to the vast majority of Wycombe followers. The news was delivered to Club Chairman Ivor Beeks on Thursday 18th March in seperate and unconnected resignation letters. Both have included family reasons for their departure but it's understood that an unnegotiable 20% wage cut, if Wanderers are relegated, played its part in their decision. Along with players and other backroom staff, the dup also accepted a 10% wage deferral earlier this season. The 20% cut in wages is thought to be being applied to a similar set of staff.
Jones, who has been with the Club since 1986 and has worked with nine different Managers, is taking up a senior lecturing position at the University of Hertfordshire. He commented on the Club's official website "It has been a very difficult decision, however, I feel that this is an excellent opportunity and a good career move." Jones went on to add "It was a very, very difficult decision to make but I felt that with everything going on at the Football Club at the moment and with what my own personal thoughts were, this was probably an ideal opportunity to move forward and to allow the new Wycombe Wanderers to employ the staff they want and move forward."
Jones enjoyed a lucrative testimonial match with Spurs earlier in the 2003/4 season, also commented to the Bucks Free Press "I have got to have some security. The club is not in a good financial state and this opportunity to advance my career coincided with my decision."
Wycombe v Coventry City programme - 5th October 1993 Meanwhile, Evans, who will be taking up a position in the company gym at Club Sponsors loans.co.uk, has stated that the 'new regime' at the Club and the financial blow due to Wanderers' invevitable relegation, had influenced his decision. Evans, who played for Wycombe between 1993 and 1997, and later returned as Youth Team physio at the start of the 1998/99 season under Neil Smillie, had spoken to the Chairman two weeks previous about options for the future and they had agreed that it was "probably the best thing to move on".
The loss of the duo has been hailed as an 'end of an era' by leading Club officials and comes after the departure of Lawrie Sanchez, Terry Gibson and Michael Forsyth from the Management team at Adams Park. Evans concluded "Knowing that Dave was likely to go as well really made my mind up that it was time to move on and it has left the door open for Tony Adams to bring his own people in."
The Club are planning to parade the duo at a forthcoming home match in order for them to say their final farewell's.
