RHINO AT FANS FORUM
(Friday 15th August 2003)
Keith Ryan Wanderers' Club Captain Keith Ryan says he's confident that the team will prove wrong the bookmakers that predict Wycombe will be relegated this season. Ryan also revealed how the players were intially against the wage deferral proposal.
Ryan was talking at the Fans Forum held in the Vere Suite at Adams Park on Tuesday 12th August where he said "I think we’ve got the best squad of players that we’ve had for a number of years now. I was lucky enough to be in the side that got promoted from the Conference into the Football League and into the Second Division and this squad has a lot going for it. There is a good team moral and it’s full of a lot of youngsters that really, really want to get on."
Ryan, who missed the pre-season campaign through injury, said that he'd been impressed with the form shown in the friendlies and added "It looks like the Manager has set his stall out and chosen the style of play that he wants to play with the wingers and it really suits us at the moment. I don’t think we will looking at the bottom of the league table this season. I really think, and without putting too much pressure on us, we can certainly achieve the aim of staying in this division. If we are there or there about with ten or five games to go then we have every chance of getting into the play-offs places.
Earlier at the forum Ryan said the recent decision to defer some of the players wages was met with dismay by the squad when they first heard the news. However, Ryan added "Myself and a couple of other senior players had a long chat with Rod (Tomlin) about where the Club was going and it was made plainly obvious to us that if we didn’t do something now, there may not be a football club in a year’s time. At the moment the cash flow is the really serious issue.
Ryan added that it wasn't a decision that the players could dismiss, concluding "It was a serious decision about their future as well as the Club’s future and on that basis we sat down and had long discussions amongst ourselves, guided by the PFA who are our representatives. None of us liked the thought of doing it but we have been given complete guarantees by The Chairman, Rod and The Board that the wage deferment was vital to the club’s survival."
