WANDERERS IN SCOTLAND 2002
Ayr United Thursday 25th July 2002 - Somerset Park
Ayr United 1 Wycombe Wanderers 2

Stuart Roberts and Richard Harris scored their first Wycombe goals as The Wanderers opened their mini Socttish tour with a 2-1 victory at Ayr United. The game marked the Wycombe debut for new signing Craig Faulconbridge who played up front in a 4-3-2-1 formation. However, the victory was also completed without Martin Taylor, Gavin Holligan, Andy Rammell and Sean Devine - all recovering from injury problems. Paul McCarthy missed the trip due to his wife having just given birth.
Manager Lawrie Sanchez watched the game from the stands and the absence of several senior players saw Sanchez give run outs to four of Wycombe's Third Year Youth Team scholars - namely Ryan Parsons, Jack Smillie, Lewis Cook and Jonny Dixon.
The game itself was a fairly lesuirely work out for Wycombe although stand-in keeper Mark Osborn had his post to thank in the 22nd minute when James Grady's 20 yarder beat him to his left. Faulconbridge went close with a header on 35 minutes before Wycombe opened the scoring two minutes later when Danny Senda's deep cross from the right flank was headed home by Roberts at the far post. Osborn gathered with ease from David Craig just before the break as Wycombe went in a goal ahead
Half-time Ayr 0 Wycombe 1
Ayr came close to equalising just before the hour mark when Paul Lovering hit the bar but Wycombe doubled their lead shortly afterwards. Darren Currie opted to take a corner from the left and when Lee headed on a partial clearance, Harris was there to head home from around eight yards.
A flurry of substitutions gave the closing stages of the game a more experimental feel, with Lewis Cook and Jonny Dixon both going close following crosses from the left. Ayr managed to pull a goal back on 77 minutes when a ball in from the home left was headed past Osborn and into the far corner by McManus. Ayr pressed in the closing stages but the Wycombe defence held out.
