Wanderers Reserves went down 2-1 in an even encounter at a sunny Roots Hall. All the goals came inside a four minute spell during the first-half in a game where there was limited goalmouth action.
Wanderers started the game with a fairly unusual 'three at the back' formation with the 'old heads' of Keith Ryan and Jason Cousins playing alongside Youth Team prospect Roger Johnson. It was a formation that left Wycombe exposed although the home side were fortunate to take the lead on 14 minutes when Roscoe Dsane's cross from the right struck Johnson's arm and the referee pointed to the spot. David McSweeney converted the spot-kick, blasting his effort into top right corner of the net with Mark Osborn going the wrong way. Just over a minute later a Wycombe attack broke down and Daniel Webb (son of former Southend boss David) outpaced Cousins before shooting low past Osborn to make the score 2-0.
Wanderers got back into the game on 20 minutes from the first corner of the game, Dave Carroll delivering the ball from the left for Leeyon Phelan to flick on and Ian Simpemba to blast home from close range.
Minor knocks to both Simpemba and Phelan left Wycombe to re-organise slightly but Michael Forysth's side went on to enjoy the majority of the play. However, after eventually switching to a back five and playing Marc Leach and Stewart Castledine up front, worthwhile efforts on goal were rare. Dannie Bulman shot just over on 73 minutes but the best chance to equalise came with eight minutes remaining when Paul Emblen headed wide across the face of the goal after Johnson had played on a cross from the right.
