After the previous week's set-back against Barnet when Wanderers fielded two triallists, there was a more familiar feel to the line-up against The U's. Ben Townsend and Martyn Lee continued their comebacks after recent injuries, while Dave Carroll returned following his back problem. Against a very youthful and inexperienced Oxford side, Wycombe took the lead in the 26th minute when Carroll played through Stewart Castledine who finished by slotting the ball under the advancing 'keeper. The lead was extended three minutes into the second period when Lee's free-kick from the half-way line was cleared to the edge of the United penalty area. Paul Emblen headed the ball back into the near post where Phelan tucked the ball in from close range. The closest the visitors came to scoring came on 54 minutes when a glancing header hit the post. However, Phelan then grabbed his second and Wycombe's third on the hour mark. Carroll delivered a corner from the left that Roger Johnson flicked on. Emblen then saw his effort blocked before Phelan showed his poachers instinct by converting the loose ball. Ben Townsend completed the rout in the 74th minute with a bizzare strike. He shot from 30 yards out on the left wing only for the Oxford 'keeper to try and control the ball with his chest and then watch with embarassment as the ball squirmed past him and over the line. Oxford finished the game with ten men when the very diminutive Dwight Ciampoli was sent off for two bookable offences in the space of less than 90 seconds. Final Score Wycombe 4 Oxford United 0
