MAHER ON TRIAL AT HATTERS
(Wednesday 8th August 2001)

Shaun Maher - picture Paul Lewis Wycombe target Shaun Maher lasted just 39 minutes for Luton Town before picking up an injury and being substituted in The Hatters' friendly with Spurs on Tuesday evening. The Irish centre-back is on a two week trial with Luton and Lawrie Sanchez was understood to be at Kenilworth Road watching the 23 year old. Maher is available on a free transfer from Irish Champions Bohemian but Sanchez has said "He's one of the biggest wage earners at Bohemiam. He's not a cheap alternative"

Luton now look favourites to tempt the tall defender over to the UK. Joe Kinnear spoke about Maher after the game with Spurs, "I saw Shaun Maher last season. He's on the verge of the Irish team and I thought he did very well up to getting injured. He's twisted his ankle and it's flared up, so it's strapped up with ice on it. He's got great possibilities and I'm thinking of signing him. He's one I like a lot. There's more to come from him. He's a young kid, he's got great pace, he reads the game well for a young kid, he's very competitive, and he sticks his head in. I like him. A good lad to have around and he can only get better. He's another one I intend to sign."

However, Boh's former boss Roddy Collins, now in charge at Carlisle United, has also been showing interest. Collins was hoping to talk to Maher before Luton stepped in.

The interest from the English club's means that current Bohemain boss Pete Mahon is preparing to lose one of his most influential players. He told the Irish Sun "I can’t stop Shaun talking to Carlisle, or anyone else for that matter. Shaun is a free agent and can join another club. He is free to do whatever he wants to do. Obviously, I am hoping he will stay at Bohs. But if Shaun goes, there is nothing we can do to keep him here. It’s that simple. It’s up to him now. He’s got to decide what he wants to do. But I’m not sure Carlisle would be a step forward for him. I’m not even sure it’s a step sideways."
