FULHAM WIN LADIES FINAL AT AP
(Sunday 7th April 2002)
Fulham Ladies romped to a 7-1 victory over Birmingham City in the final of the AXA sponsored Women's Premier League Cup final held at Adams Park on Sunday (7th April). A crowd of just over 1,500 saw the Mohamed Al Fayed funded full-time professionals overwhelm their part-time opponents with a display of skillful passing football and clinical finishing on a sunny afternoon in High Wycombe. Al Fayed joined the Fulham team for the presentation of the trophy, the first major honour in the history of Fulham Ladies FC.

Fulham celebrate a goal The match itself saw Fulham take the lead as early as the 3rd minute when Katie Chapman headed home following a cross from the right. City, managed by QPR midfielder Marcus Bignot, then held Fulham until two minutes before the break when Margunn Haugenes scored from close after a corner crept through from the right.
Haugenes, a gold medallist with Norway Ladies in the Sydney Olympics, headed her second in the 62nd minute, but four minutes later Birmingham grabbed a consolation goal when midfielder Jodie McGuckin drove in a Katy Ward cross.
However, a City comeback was never on the cards as within a minute Fulham had restored their three goal cushion when City Captain Laura Bassett headed a cross into her own net. Fulham then added three further goals in the final nine minutes as their superior fitness told. Substitute Deena Rahman lobbed home in the 81st minute before Marianne Pettersen drove home Haugenes' 86th minute cross. Chapman headed the final goal during stoppage time to complete the rout.
Final Score Fulham 7 Birmingham City 1 - Att: 1,512
