SANCH ON THE RADIO
(Tuesday 31st July 2001)

Lawrie and that Cup thing - picture Paul LewisLawrie Sanchez was a guest on BBC Radio's FiveLive 'Any Sporting Questions' on Tuesday 31st July. The programme broadcast live from Braywick Sports Grpund, Maidenhead, also included Lawrence Dallaglio, Derek Redmond and Claire Strange as guests with Mark Saggers fielding the questions.

The Wycombe Manager commented on a number of subjects, including the pressure put on players to perform despite injuries. Sanchez said "The more you pay people, the more you need them to perform. There is a pressure on athletes and sportsmen to come back a little bit early."

The question was also raised whether it concerned Sanchez how much you have to ask people to come in through the turnstiles. "It does a bit but we are professional and we have to make ends meet and at our club we are a co-operative, so what comes in is what goes out." Sanchez went on the express his concern at high prices at the top level "At certain events it has got too expensive for the ordinary man in the street. Football is a game now that has gone very middle class, very corporate. Whether that's a good thing or not, time will tell. When the corporate people get fed up with football it will be interesting to see who will fill the seats. But at the moment we are a booming industry. We are the new 'rock and roll' and everybody likes to be associated with it"

Speaking of fans expectations of their club's, Sanchez said "We've come back to Wycombe this week and we played quite well in our first pre-season friendly and my fans expect us to win the title. The fact that other teams have spent millions of pounds in the market and we've brought one player and let one player go, they expect that same team because they got to the semi-final and finished 13th in the League, to win the title next year"
