LADIES EDGED OUT AT ADAMS PARK
(Thursday 25th April 2002) Wycombe Wanderers Ladies were edged out by two goals to one in their crucial Adams Park encounter against Stocklake in the Women's Regional Southern - Northern Division. Wanderers took an early lead but the Aylesbury based side hit back in the second-half and the destiny of the title is now out of the Wanderers hands. Stocklake now trail Wanderers by two points but have a game in hand. Wanderers have just one game remaining - at home to Luton Town Belles but will be watching Stocklake's remaining two games with interest. In front of a healthy attendance of around 150, Wanderers took the lead on 20 minutes when both Sophy Bowden and Heather Scutchings challenged with the visiting 'keeper for a 50/50 ball and the ball ended in the back of the net. Wanderers' defence did an excellent shut out job on Stocklake for the remainder of the half and top scorer Su Oakley could have made it 2-0 on 57 minutes when she took the ball around the 'keeper but saw her effort cleared off the line. The visitors drew level on 63 minutes when Dannielle Busby followed up a shot that had come off the crossbar and despite the brave efforts of Wanderers 'keeper Tracy Sturges, the Stocklake player managed to convert. Nine minutes later there was a further set-back for Wycombe when a poor back pass saw the ball centred from the right flank and Danny Christian was on hand to tuck the ball home with Sturges stranded. Wanderers heads seem to drop a little after the second goal but there were loud appeals for a penalty close to the end for a blatant handball in the Stocklake area. However, the appeals were waved away and despite a couple of last minute efforts it was Stocklake who hung for a vital victory.
