WASPS KEEN ON WYCOMBE MOVE
(Friday 21st December 2001) While Wycombe fans were waiting for more 'official' word on the proposed move to bring London Wasps Rugby Club to Adams Park, Wasps Chairman, Chris Wright has written to Season Ticket Holders of the Zurich Premiership side. Wright said "Whilst there maybe some financial advantage to London Wasps in temporarily vacating Loftus Road, we clearly do not want to do anything which would jeopardise London Wasp’s long term future for a short term gain. However, having explored further the possibility of a temporary relocation to Wycombe, many of us involved at London Wasps have become enormously intrigued about the potential of moving there." Wright thinks that the 10,000 capacity Adams Park with its excellent facilities including extensive bar and dining areas "would make a most ideal rugby stadium". He also added "Nigel Melville (Director of Rugby at Wasps) is certainly aware that we could generate a much better atmosphere in a near sold out 10,000 seater stadium than is possible at Loftus Road where we are unlikely to get close to filling 19,000 seats." Wright confirmed that an initial deal could be struck for two years but added "Of course such a move might prove so successful that we would wish to stay there beyond this period." However, he pointed out "London Wasps has a long term right to ground-share at Loftus Road and this would not be effected by the temporary move to Wycombe." Wasps struck a ten-year deal with QPR in the summer and currently pay Rangers in the region of £17,000 per match for 'a clean stadium'. Wycombe and Wasps have held two further meetings since the original story broke on Monday 10th December but no firm financial details have been released, although it's understood that the cost of replacing the Adams Park pitch will be around £350,000. The current surface is unsuitable for Rugby and will need to converted to a 'Desso' style pitch similar to QPR, Reading and Watford. Click here to read all the latest Wycombe news |
