COTTAGE MEMORIES
(Tuesday 15th January 2002)
Fulham v Wycombe programme - Feb 1994 Wanderers' trip to Craven Cottage for a replay in the Third Round of the FA Cup has re-kindled memories of dramatic cup tie between Fulham and Wycombe back in the 1993/94 season. Wycombe, in their debut season in the Football League, travelled to London in the Southern Area Semi-Final of the Autoglass Trophy and after more than two hours of football plus a nerve jangling penalty shoot-out, returned home gallant winners.
A lot of water has passed under the Putney Bridge since then but while Al Fayed's millions have paved The Cottagers way into the Premier League, Wycombe will battle out the FA Cup replay with three members from the squad of February 1994. Dave Carroll, Jason Cousins and Keith Ryan are all still performing heroics for Wycombe, with Carroll, a former trainee with Fulham, probably being drafted in at right back for the suspended Danny Senda for only his second start of the season.
Back in 1994 Wanderers had to bridge the gap between Division Three and Two to overcome The Cottagers. This time around it's a quantum leap and like former Wycombe boss John Gregory once said, it's the 'cornershop' taking on Harrods. However, what ever happens, if the entertainment is on par with the 1994 meeting, there should be few complaints.
